Let's talk Corporate Voiceover work, specifically Case Studies.
Case Studies are exactly what they sound like. A company focuses on something they did and tells a story to illustrate how they solved a problem. They are like science projects in high school.
The basic outline is; problem, hypothesis, experiment, results, what we would change next time OR here's how we can help your company also have fantastic results. Look at us, we're awesome etc.
This is when the voiceover artist gets to do some corporate storytelling. Give those numbers some life! Speak like you are the person who came up with the big cool idea. Guess what we did at work everybody, cuz we crushed it - that sort of thing.
Other things that make Case Studies fun are: a) they're usually under 3 minutes and b) the writing is surprisingly punchy and fun. The project is about something a company is proud of, so they'll get a little creative.
One big drawback of Case Studies is that you usually don't get to see the finished project and that's the case with the one I did that inspired what I call my "Yoga Pants" read, below.
How did it become my Yoga Pants read? I auditioned for a Case Study about yoga pants (and that's as specific as I'll get) that wanted someone with attitude. Usually, I don't try out for things that ask for attitude but since I like Case Studies, I put on my meanest Corporate voice and gave it a shot.
I kind of tried to emulate someone who says stuff like, "I have no filter, it's just who I am." Which is totally NOT me but...
I guess my "bad bitch energy" was just bad enough because they booked me. In the study I got to be kind of snotty, proud and use my lower register. It was a change for me and I mentioned it in a session when I worked with Anne Ganguzza.
We tried it on a few practice scripts and that's how my Innocent Drinks demo spot happened. It's my yoga pants read, ready for telling it like it is, #sorrynotsorry
All of this goes to show that you never know what voice is inside of you. I'm not saying try out for EVERYTHING on a job board (on some p2p's definitely do not do that) but if you think you have a handle on something outside of your comfort zone, go for it, you might find your next very bookable read.
AND don't just scroll by those Case Studies on job boards. Check out the script, it might be more fun than you think.
