At first he’s being a jerk and has his guard up but then when he knows that he is supposed to be vulnerable (which he never is), he lets his guard down and tells the truth.
The audience didn’t change, the words are the same but his intention and energy changed. He has a totally different read that leads to a different result (music helps too obvs).
